7 Helpful Tips on How to Start Yoga Today

We are living in the time when stress is everywhere around us. In fact, according to a 2012 analysis, the levels of stress people experience have significantly increased (for about 20%) in the last couple of decades. Not only that, we are also slaves to sedentary behavior, which has a negative effect on our metabolism and health each day. So, what can we do to fight it? Well, yoga is believed to successfully improve both of these conditions. However, although we are well aware of yoga’s benefits, starting something new that requires finding time and changing our habits is very challenging. If you want to begin with this life-changing practice, here are seven tips that will help you get on the mat, today.

Pick a yoga style

There are many different yoga types, and if you enter this without any research and just pick any of them, you might give up ahead of time if it is not the style for you. Usually vinyasa and hatha are great choices for beginners, but if you are in great physical shape and have some experience, you might want to start with a more fast-paced style, like ashtanga. After you make your choice, find a YouTube tutorial or a yoga DVD that will get you on the right track.

Find your quiet place

Practicing yoga doesn’t require a proper Zen room (but if you can make it, why not?). All you need to do is to find a quiet space without clutter. It can be a nook in your living room, a balcony or your bedroom. Make sure there are as little interruptions as possible.

Find the time

The main excuse for not practicing yoga (even if you have that in your agenda for a long time) is that there is simply no time. Start with small pockets of time (about ten minutes), and you will see how easy it will be to increase them later.

Get the necessary equipment

Equipping yourself for at-home yoga lessons is not that hard as you might think. Many shops like Sivana Spirit already have everything you need to start practicing yoga, from the most basic items like altar mats and cushions, to the more refined ones like Tibetan om singing bowls. As for the clothes, you can wear whatever you are comfortable in, as long as it is not limiting your movements or making you unsafe.

Do the Beginner’s Class or Workshop

If you are unsure of your ability to keep up with a yoga instructor on the screen, you can try a beginner’s class or a workshop in a local yoga studio before you plunge into online classes. These classes are designed to help you learn commonly used poses and align your body properly. This way, you’ll be far less prone to injuries.

Baby steps

Do not expect to be a true guru after your first take on yoga. Start with simple asanas and meditation. Most importantly, do yoga in a way that makes you happy and satisfied. As soon as you feel pain or discomfort, you should readjust your body.

Find motivation

Finding motivation for any kind of exercise is difficult, and the process is different for every person. Some people love to have an exercise (yoga) buddy, others enjoy their individual accomplishments. Whatever gets you going, make sure you tell that to yourself until yoga becomes a habit, a lifestyle.

Yoga truly has many benefits, for both the mind and the body. If you decide to start with it, you have definitely made a good decision. Hopefully, these seven tips will help you begin doing yoga and experience all of its perks first hand.
